The Jamaica Athletes' Insurance Plan (JAIP) is the Government of Jamaica's Group Health, Group Life and Group Personal Accident Insurance Plan designed for all eligible national athletes. The Plan is administered by the Sport Policy Development and Monitoring Branch in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.
Athletes eligible for support must meet the following eligibility criteria:
If an athlete is injured and is unable to return to competition, the national association/federation can assess the athlete’s medical condition and make a recommendation to the Ministry for that athlete to continue to be covered under the insurance plan until he/she is replaced on the team.
Pre-existing conditions are defined as health conditions that were in existence before the cover was effective whether the insured was aware of it or not. There is a six (6) month wait time before enrolment on the Plan.
(This is related to the Permanent Disability, meaning they had the accident but did not die).
If the athlete dies naturally the payment will be J$2.3m. If death is by accident the J$3m is also paid making it a total of J$5.3m.
Benefits are not paid if the death is by suicide.
The Health Plan offers extensive coverage for medical consultations and treatment which includes:
Where a service provider does not accept the health card, you may pay up-front for the services and submit a completed health claim form, along with proof of payment. This can be routed through the Sport Policy Development and Monitoring Branch at the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, or delivered directly to the insurer within ninety (90) days of medical/health service received. The provider MUST also stamp, sign and date the claim form.
Each member will be provided with 2 health cards, a magnetic swipe card and a benefits card. Your swipe card can be used at all participating service providers. However, pre-authorization is required for surgical treatments. Special provisions are made under the plan for members who travel overseas for competition and those who reside overseas. Please note, that the swipe cards can only be used in Jamaica.
