Jamaica Athletes' Insurance Plan(JAIP)

The JAIP is the GOJ’s Group Health, Group Life and Personal Accident Plan for all eligible National Athletes. It provides basic Group Health insurance along with Group Life and Personal Accident insurance coverage.

The National Sport Policy (2013) commits the Jamaican Government to pursue the establishment and maintenance of a sustainable health and life insurance for all eligible national athletes.

Where the service provider does not participate, the athlete is encouraged to pay upfront and request the completed claim form, route the same through the Sport Branch of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, and Entertainment & Sport or directly to the insurer for consideration.

  • Membership in a national association/federation.
  • Member is in “Good Standing” with the national association/federation.
  • Enrollment in the national development programme for a specific sporting discipline.
  • Willingness to undergo a pre-participation examination.
  • Participation in at least two (2) Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) training sessions per year.

An athlete may apply by completing the necessary enrollment forms.

An athlete will continue to receive coverage under the Plan while recovering from injury as long as he/she remains on the national squad. If the injury prevents the athlete from returning to competition and it is determined by the national association/federation that the athlete will be dropped from the squad, the athlete will continue to receive coverage until his/her place on the squad is replaced.

Yes, the difference in cost will be borne by the athlete and changes can only be made across plans at the time of joining and upon renewal.

There is a six (6) months wait period after enrollment for major procedures. For items, that can be accessed at the point of service with the Sagicor Health electronic card, there would be no waiting period.

No, the Plan is a local one. Special provisions are made under the Plan for members who travel overseas, for competition and also for those who reside overseas.

You may select any person(s), trustee, or other legal entity as your beneficiaries. If at the time of death, there are no surviving beneficiaries, benefits will be paid to the executor or administrator of your estate. Beneficiaries can be changed at any time by contacting the programme administrator for the appropriate form.

You will become insured on the first of the month on or following the date approved by your association/federation.

Your member coverage will cease on the premium due date on or the following the earliest of the following dates:

  • You reach the age of 75 years.
  • The group plan is terminated by the policyholder.

Athletes can access care overseas but this service requires pre-authorization from Sagicor by calling the 1-855 number on the Sagicor card. Athletes are however encouraged where possible to return home to access the service in Jamaica since the Plan is denominated in Jamaican dollars and will be reimbursed in the equivalent of the coverage in Jamaican dollars.
